What temperature to avoid for flowers in garden pots
Many gardeners wonder what the proper temperature is for putting flowers into pots. It’s a common question, and it certainly does have a big impact on the health and success of the plants.
We can’t really answer this for the entire gardening world. That would require a book as big as yours truly! But we can offer some guidelines for pots that sit indoors on a windowsill, or on a porch with the winter sun.
For plants that have just a few blooms to set fruit in the fall, you’ll have the most success when you keep the soil as cold as possible until the weather starts to warm up again in early spring. That means a cool, but well-draining soil – not wet. It’s worth the extra water in the warmer months, if you don’t mind watering more often.
If you have a plant like this, you’ll want to give it lots of attention right away. The plants are quite vulnerable to problems during the first three months or so of growth.
If you like to get fresh herbs into your home, it’s good to start small. A pot of herbs is not a good place to begin your own herbal medicine collection. The herbs will need to be carefully tended in order to grow well. They need a steady supply of nutrients. They need to be left alone.
This is particularly true of mint. Mint doesn’t grow in a straight line, and so you’ll need to work through the pot to prune it down a little bit every week. If you do this, the plant will grow a bit faster. If you leave the plant longer, the mint will grow out into the yard.
Keep an eye on the temperature – don’t let the window sill get too cold.
Gardening Supplies &, Tips
I want to grow herbs for home use. What tools will I need?
Many herbs can be grown successfully with just a few simple tools. You can put this together for less than $30.
To begin with, you should have a pair of garden shears. These are great to have as they allow you to cut the plant from its container. They also allow you to prune the stems of the herb, to ensure that the plant gets its complete share of light, nutrients and moisture.
Next, a good gardening knife is a must for any home gardener. A good tool that will last you a long time is a sharpening steel. I use a product called “Dyna Sharp”. It’s inexpensive, but really gets the job done. It is also very safe to use with metal (the steel side, not the cutting edge).
The other tools you will need are a good potting soil, a planting stake and twine. A good potting soil will have compost or manure added to it. It will be heavy and will make it easier to move the plant in and out of the pot. A staking peg (to place in the ground to make the plant’s position straight) and twine are used for keeping the plant in a straight position. The twine is left on the plant until it flowers or fruits. It then can be removed, before the plant starts to die off.
You can use your children to help you with gardening. Give them a stake and encourage them to be creative and fun!
Get all the plants you wish to have in your garden, into a container and then plant them. Be sure to keep them watered as you go, and remember to check on them every day.
